Charminar

Synonymous with Hyderabad, Charminar is a must-see attraction of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Reflecting the glorious past of the state, this monument is an architectural masterpiece. Known for its beauty, this wonderful structure is located in the heart of the city of Nawabs. The word Charminar means 'Four Towers' or 'Mosque of the four minarets'. Surrounded by the shops of the bustling Lad Bazaar, it is often called 'The Arc de triumph of the East'.

History
Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutab Shah built Charminar in the year 1591. He was the founder of Hyderabad who made a great contribution to the city's cultural heritage. According to the legend, the monument symbolizes the promise of the Sultan to Allah. He prayed to Allah to eliminate the deadly disease plague from the city and finally his prayer was answered. He then built this monument, a mosque, which later came to be known as Charminar because of its four minarets.

While laying the foundation of Charminar, Sultan prayed for peace and prosperity of the city. And today the city is one of the most prosperous cities of India.

Architecture and Attractions
Reflecting the elegant Cazia style of architecture, Charminar is a square monument built with granite and lime mortar. Towering to a height of 48.7 m above the ground, the four minarets of the monument are exquisitely carved. Each minaret has four stories. The highest point of the monument offers mesmerizing views of the city.

The exquisite arches and domes of Charminar reflect wonderful Islamic architecture. Also notable is the arresting floral motif on the top of the monument. The monument looks stunning at night when it is illuminated. The main gallery has 45 covered prayer spaces with a large open space in front to accommodate more people for Friday prayers.
