The highly frequented Devi Kanaka Durga Temple is the most popular landmark of the city of Vijayawada. As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to Devi Kanaka Durga, who is the goddess of power, riches and benevolence. She is also the presiding deity of the city. The deity, perched over the Indrakiladri hill, is believed to be Swayambhu or self-manifested.

Myths Associated
As the legend goes, the demon King Mahishasura was causing a lot of trouble to the natives. It was Sage Indrakilla who requested the goddess Kanaka Devi to reside on his head and keep an eye on the demon king. Sage Indrakilla assumed the form of a mountain, and the goddess made it her permanent abode. Later the goddess killed the demon and brought relief to the people.

Contrary to this, some people believe that it was the place where Arjuna, the Pandava Prince, worshipped Lord Shiva and obtained the Pasupatha Astra after great penance. This temple was then constructed by Arjuna for Goddess Durga.

Architecture
The temple houses an enchanting 4 ft high idol of Goddess Durga. The goddess is standing over the demon King Mahishasura and is seen piercing him with her trident. She holds eight powerful weapons in her eight arms and is decorated with glittering ornaments and bright flowers.

Several inscriptions, carved on the walls of the temple, are attributed to different dynasties. The Sri Chakra here is said to be installed by Adi Sankara. Lord Shiva is also worshipped in the temple as Malleshwara.

Vasantotsava, Dussehra and Shivratri are the important festivals that are celebrated here. You can get a panoramic view of the entire city and the River Krishna flowing alongside it from this temple.
