It is an ancient temple covering the area between the river bank and the foot of the hills. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is popularly known as Dakshina Kailasam.

This temple is one of the greatest impressions left behind by King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagar dynasty. The name of the town was derived from three animals, Sri (spider), Kala(snake) and Hasti (elephant). It is believed that these animals worshiped lord Shiva at this place and attained enlightenment. The main shrine houses a statue, which shows all three animals.

The mind blowing architectural style of the temple is the result of the combination of the Chola, Pallava, Pandya and Krishnadevaraya styles of architecture.
