Taking pride in its fascinating beauty, the Chandikesvara Temple is visited by many a tourist. Its architectural brilliance make it one of the most attractive temples of Hampi. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is a must-visit for people having inclination towards history and architecture. The first thing you will notice about the temple is the enchanting Yalis ( a Hindu mythical creature with the body of a lion and some features of an elephant) at its entrance gate.

Reflecting the Vijayanagara style of architecture, Chandikesvara Temple was built by the Vijayanagar rulers. You will be left spell bound after seeing its mesmerizing pillars embellished with carvings touching several themes from the Hindu mythology. At one point of time, the temple housed a beautiful idol of the Lord. However, now there is no idol in the main shrine.

There are two shrines located inside the Chandikesvara Temple. The main shrine is centrally located and the other shrine is located in the north west area of the temple. The mind-blowing pillar hall inside the main shrine is a striking feature of the temple. Some of the carvings which deserve mention are the image of Garuda (the eagle), Kamadenu(the godly cow) and Lord Hanuman. Embracing the temple tower are the partially damaged stucco images, which still look beautiful. Something which should not be missed is the 'seven hundred pillared' hall. It is located just outside the Chandikesvara Temple.
