Krishna Temple

Badavilinga Temple

Built beautifully in honor of Lord Krishna, the Krishna Temple is visited by many a tourist from across the globe. Located in an ideal environment, the temple was built in the 16th century by the ruler Krishnadevaraya. He built the temple to celebrate his victory over the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri or Utkala ( present day Orissa state). Constructed in a fascinating Vijayanagara style of architecture, the temple is one of the finest monuments built during the rein of Vijayanagar empire.

The sanctum sanctorum of the Krishna Temple once housed an attractive idol of Balkrishna (lord Krishna as an infant). But now the idol has been transferred to the state museum in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. There is an arresting boulder located inside the courtyard, which depicts the history of the construction of the temple and the invasion of Ulkala. The exquisite carvings of Yalis (the mythical lion) on the pillars of the temple are truly a treat to the eyes. The temple complex encompasses several small shrines. The main tower of the temple has been renovated and its mesmerizing carvings look great. The carvings on the walls beautifully tell the stories from the great Hindu Epic. The temple houses fabulous carvings of the 10 carnations of Lord Vishnu.
