Rangatha Temple

Rangatha Temple

One of the fascinating temples of Hampi, Rangatha Temple was built in honor of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Universe. Locally the temple is known as Vishnu temple. The temple is well known for its carvings of the Ananta Sayana aspect of lord Vishnu. The carving depicts lord Vishnu resting on the serpent Ananta. Beautifully done, this carving is one of the main highlights of the temple.

Rangatha Temple is located in the northern end of the Courtesan's street, near the wonderful Achyut Raya's temple. The main shrine is in rectangular shape with a porch outside it. Dimly lit, the main shrine houses the beautiful images of the heavenly deities. It is always better to visit the temple during day time as it helps to see the images in the main shrine quite clearly. In case you visit the temple in evening, then you might miss out the inner architectural beauty of the main shrine.

The beautiful images of lord Vishnu, his consorts and lord Brahma look impressive. The image of the Lord Vishnu resting on the Cosmic snake with his consorts, goddess Laxmi and goddess Bhudevi sitting on his two sides attract attention. Whereas Lord Brahma is seated on a lotus flower.
