Tipu Sultan Palace & Museum

Tipu Sultan Palace

If you missed the Tipu Sultan's Palace on your Bangalore tour, your trip is certainly not worth. This two-storied palace standing adorned with pillars, arches and balconies is a must visit in Bangalore. Situated near the City Market, the fort dates back to the year 1537. It was Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, who built the fort initially. But later, it was extended by Tipu Sultan, the Emperor of Mysore.

It was the historical place where Hyder Ali, the father of Tipu Sultan, imprisoned David Baird and a number of other army officers of the British during a war. After the death of Tipu sultan, the palace was used by the British as their secretariat, till the year 1867.

Architectural Beauty
The fort, covering an are area of 400 acres, seems to be inspired by the Windsor castle. The intricately carved arches of the Tipu Sultan Fort are built as per the Islamic architectural style. The Tipu Sultan's Palace, which dates back to the year 1790, lies within the fort only. Another major attraction of the fort is the well-preserved Ganapati temple situated inside it. The temple clearly depicts Tipu Sultan's religious tolerance.

Apart from that, you will find beautiful gardens on both the sides of the palace, which lead to its main entrance. Beautiful floral motifs embellish the walls as well as the ceilings of the Palace. A dedication on the wooden screen reports the palace to be an 'Abode of Happiness'. This double storied flowery wooden structure also has columns, curves and balconies, which are laid with gardens on both sides of the path.

Museum
The palace has now been converted into a museum, that exhibits artifacts that are evidence of Tipu Sultan’s bravery.

The fort is built entirely of teakwood and it served as the summer residence of Tipu Sultan.
