Uddana Veerabhadra Temple

Veerabhadra Temple

Uddana Veerabhadra Temple is a small shrine known for its architectural beauty. Dedicated to the goddess Veerabhadra, the temple is an important religious site of the Hindus. There are several legends associated with the origin of the goddess and the cult related to its worship. It is believed that the goddess is an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

According to the most popular legend, Sati, the daughter of Daksha (the king of God's), married lord Shiva against her father's will. Daksha never liked Lord Shiva because he wears funeral ash and snakes on his body. One day Daksha held a yagna ceremony at his home and sent the invitation to everyone, excluding Sati and Shiva. But Sati still went to the ceremony, although Shiva had asked her not to go. Seeing Sati there Daksha insulted her and abused her husband in front of all the guests. Red with anger Sati committed suicide by jumping into the sacrificial fire.

As the news of Sati's suicide reached Lord Shiva, he got furious and beheaded king Daksha. Scared by the lord's ire, all the heavenly deities approached him and requested him to forgive Daksha and to give him his life back. The lord agreed and said that he will replace the head of Daksha with the first animal he encounters. Goat was the first animal he saw and hence revived Daksha. Daksha got his life back and  he became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

The main shrine houses a 3.6 m high monolithic idol of the goddess. The idol looks beautiful with four hands holding an arrow, sword, bow and shield. The shrine also houses an idol of Daksha. Lord Shiva is also worshiped in the shrine in the form of a Linga. Photography is allowed in the temple.
