Jewish Synagogue

Jewish Synagogue

Built in the year 1568, the Jewish Synagogue is visited by many a tourist who come to Kerala for vacations. It is also known as Mattancherry Synagogue. Its peaceful and beautiful environment add more charm to its beauty. It shares its boundary wall with the Mattancherry Palace Temple. It was built by the Malabar Yehudan people or Cochin Jewish community who were the inhabitants of the city during that period. The city has six more Synagogues but the Jewish Synagogue is the only one which is operational. The Synagogue was built at the land, which was gifted to the Malabari Yehuden Jewish community by the erstwhile ruler of Cochin.

The architectural beauty of the Jewish Synagogue deserve mention. One of the striking features of the Synagogue is its tiles, which are hand printed. They were brought from China. And the best thing is that all the tiles look different. Also notable are the arresting chandeliers and the exquisite wood carvings. The then craftsmen have meticulously combined the ceramic tiles and the wood to give a perfect look to the Synagogue. The Synagogue houses a rare collection of artifacts such as the scrolls of the original Old Testament, the copper plates depicting the promise of the king Ravi Verma to the Jewish settlers to settle permanently in Cranganore. Other highlights are the gold and silver crowns, which were gifts from the kings of Kerala. TheĀ  Jewish Synagogue is open from 10 am to 12 noon and 3 pm to 5 pm. It remains open everyday except on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
