Kanchipuram is a land of temples, which are no less than architectural wonders and Kailasanatha Temple is one of them. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is one of the ancient temples built during the reign of the Pallavas. It was built by Mahendra Varma Pallava in the 8th century. Although the Pallavas left their impressions in the form of various architectural masterpieces but this temple is beyond compare. It is said that the temple also served as a rescue place for the king during wars. In fact, it is one of the oldest temples in the city. The architectural beauty of this temple majestically reflects in its gopurams, walls, pyramidal shikhara and the wall bordering the complex. One must see the beauty of the temple's walls and vimaanam, which are decorated with amazing sculptures and paintings.

The complex of the temple houses around 59 shrines. The interiors of the shrines are finely adorned with Fresco-style paintings. The panel showcasing lord Shiva and goddess Parvati in dancing poses is quite notable. The temple attracts many a tourists from far and wide.

The festival of Maha-Shivaratri is celebrated with great fervor at the temple every year. During the festival devotees flock to the temple in large numbers to take blessings of the lord. The temple is under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology, Government of India. Visitors are allowed to take photographs of the temple from outside and inside, with the exception of the main shrine and the main deity.
