It has the best of dense mixed and moist deciduous forests that are rich in bamboo, teak etc. When it comes to the fauna section, one can easily spot elephants, gaur, macaque, langur, tigers, leopards, chital, panther, sloth bear, python, barking deer, antelope, otter, giant flying squirrel, sambar, hyena and many such animals here. On the other hand, Mukurthi National Park, India's first biosphere reserve, is a home to number of bird species, including the Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Woodpigeon and Nilgiri Blackbird.

Adventure Activities
The forests of teak and rhododendron serve as the gateways to some of the best trekking routes in the Nilgiris. Trekking is the best way to explore the wildlife sanctuaries and the exotic rural culture of the region. These hills and small waterways here are also popular for fishing and angling.

The hills have small towns and villages from where you can buy the best of Nilgiri Tea, fruits, embroidery items and natural oils. If you are planning your tour in the month of January/February, you can get the opportunity to be a part of the 'Tea and Tourism Festival'. In this festival, you can relish your taste buds with the wide variety of tea.

Kotagiri Town
Nestling amidst the lush green tea gardens of the Nilgiri Hills, at an altitude of about 6,500 feet, lies the Kotagiri town, which is characterised by gentle slopes, dense forests and the tribes like the Todas, the Kurumbhas and the Irulas. These tribes are expert in weaving red, black and white embroidered shawls and carving silver jewellery. These elements also add some more beauty to the place.
