Welcome to the 'City of Legends'. This is the place where one can spend days exploring the historical monuments. People often visit the place to see a few of the most stunning creations by the Muslim rulers in India. As the history goes, we find that the city was founded in the 11th century by the Chalukya dynasty. They called it 'Vijayapura'. Later, as the place was taken over by the Bahamani sultanate of Gulbarga in the 14th century, it was being called Vijapur or Bijapur.
The city flourished at its best in the 15th century under the Adil Shah dynasty.
The Gol Gumbaz
Popular as the tomb of Mohammad Adil Shah, the Gol Gumbaz is the second largest tomb in the world, next only to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Measuring 124 m in diameter, it has four high minars in its corners. Tourist flock to the Gol Gumbaz to see its 'Whispering Gallery'. It is believed that a sound echoes 9 times in the room before fading away.
Jumma Masjid
Believed to be among the earliest of Mosques in India, Jumma Masjid is famous for the exclusive copy of the Quran which is written in gold. It covers an area of 10, 810 sq m and boasts of being one of the biggest mosques in the region. It also has decorative motifs inside, on the walls and the ceilings.
The Ibrahim Rauza
It is the beauty and architecture splendidness of Ibrahim Rauza what inspired the greatest creation in India, The Taj Mahal. It is the mausoleum of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, which is maintained with well cut out gardens in the premises that compliment the beauty of monument.
People also love to see the Malik-e-Maidan – the largest medieval cannon in the world. Legend has it that if you touch the gun and make a wish, it will come true.

The city comprises people of both Aryan and Dravidian descent. People here celebrate the Bijapur Music Festival, which features the stalwarts of Indian music. This festival is organized by the Government of Karnataka every year.
