Hampi is a rustic village dotted with fascinating ancient temples. Located in the Bellary district, the village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also a religious center where Lord Hanumana took birth. Tourists from across the globe come here to see the overwhelming architectural beauty of its temples. In terms of architecture and history, the village holds great importance. This great village is around 700 year old and was established by the two kings Hakka and Bukka in 1336.
Located on the banks of River Tugabhadra and surrounded by hills on its other three sides, Hampi was once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire(one of the strongest empire in India). It also finds mention in the great Hindu Epic, Ramayana. Many interesting legends are linked with the village. The Matanga Hill and the Malyavanta Hill in the village hold sheer religious importance. The Matanga Hill is the sacred place where Sugriva took refuge post battle with his brother Bali. Whereas the Malyavanta Hill is the place where Lord Rama came in search of Hanumana. Originally Hampi was known as Pampa, the puranic name of Tungabhadra River.
Popularly known as 'The City Of Ruins' , Hampi takes pride in its architectural heritage, which best reflects in its ancient temples, most of which are in a state of ruin. There are around 500 monuments in this village.
Hampi Festival
The rocks and ruins come alive with the celebration of Hampi Festival in the month of October/ November. Organized by the Government of Karnataka, the festival features mind blowing dance, music and drama performances by the renowned artists.
Celebrated for 3 days, the festival attracts many a tourist.

Hampi is famous for its beautiful handlooms. Some of the best shopping places in the village are Karnataka Handloom (Station road), Andhra Handloom House( Hospet) and Tamil Nadu Cooptex.
By Air: Tornagallu in Sandur is the nearest airport. Other nearby airports are at Bellary, Belgaum and Bangalore.
By Rail: Hospet is the nearest railway station, which is well connected with the main cities like Bangalore, Hubli, Bijapur and Guntakal.
By Road: Hampi is easily accessible from the main cities of South India by road.
