Famous the world over for its incredibly beautiful Meenakshi Temple, Madurai is ideally located on the banks of River Vaigai. Bordered by the wonderful hills namely Yanaimalai, Nahamalai and Pasumalai, Madurai is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu and one of the oldest cities of India. The glorious history of this city dates back to more than 2000 years ago. Madhurai flourished the most during the reign of the Cholas in the 10th  century. This city was ruled by several rulers such as the Cholas, the Pandyas, the Vijayanagar rulers and the Nayaks.

Fashioned in the shape of a lotus, Madurai is a land of art, dance, music, literature and temples. It is also in limelight for its wonderful textiles and harvests of beautiful jasmine flowers. According to the legend Lord Shiva poured nectar(Madhu) on this land and originally the city was named as Madhurapuri. Later it was renamed as Madurai.

Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple
Visit this architectural marvel and you are bound to be left enchanted. This is a world famous Hindu shrine built in honor of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati. Elaborately sculpted and carved structures of the temple are simply mind-blowing. The two golden gopurams of the temple look stunning. In total the temple has 14 captivating gopurams. 

Koodal Azhagar Temple
Known for its exquisite wood carvings, this temple is one of the ancient temples of Madurai. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
