Welcome to the 'Varanasi of the south', an island for devotion !! This religious island, spread over 61.8 square km area, is a happening holiday spot as well. As the legend goes, this is the place where Lord Rama rested and prayed after his triumph over the demon king Ravana. Rameshwaram is a sacred site for both Vaishnavites (worshipers of Lord Vishnu) and Shaivities (worshipers of Lord Shiva).

Ramanatha Swamy Temple
This masterpiece of Dravidian architecture occupies major area of Rameshwaram. It boasts of the largest temple corridor in India with its 22 huge wells, each one having medicinal powers and different taste of water. Its massive sculptured pillars are noteworthy for their elaborate design, style and rich carving. The construction of the temple began in the 12th century AD. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the inner sanctum.

Kothandaraswamy Temple
Located 12 km from the city centre, it is the place where Vibhishana, Ravana's brother, surrendered to Rama. It was the only structure to survive the 1964 cyclone which washed the rest of the village away.

Dhanushkodi
Located 8 km from Rameshwaram, this site is named after the bow of Lord Rama.

Adam's Bridge
It is the chain of small islets and reefs in the sea between Sri Lanka and Dhanushkodi, which was made by Lord Hanuman and his army to reach across Sri Lanka.

Gandhamadana Parvatam
Famous for the footprints of Lord Rama, it is the place that offers an excellent view of the countryside.

Erwadi
This famous Muslim pilgrimage site is located about 24 km from Rameshwaram. It houses the tomb of Ibrahim Sahid Auliya, which is frequented by Muslims from across the globe, especially during the month of December to participate in the annual festival.

Shopping
Being a coastal area, Rameshwaram is is known for some of the different and exquisite items. The artisans here are expert in making a variety of ornamental items made up of palm leafs and sea shells.
