Popularly known as the religious capital of South India, Kanchipuram is the perfect destination for culture-seekers. The original name of Kanchipuram was Kachi and Kachipuram. This land was ruled over by several dynasties such as the Cholas, the Pallavas and the Vigaynagar rulers. Each dynasty contributed something or the other to the rich cultural heritage of this land. During the ancient and medieval times, this city served as a great center of learning. It is also the land where the great Hindu saint Adi Sankaracharya lived.
Kamakshi Amman Temple
Built during the Chola rule in the 14th century, Kamakshi Amman Templeis one of the most famous temples in the city. Dedicated to goddess Kamakshi, the temple has breath-taking architecture.
Varadharaja Perumal Temple
The history of this temple dates back to the 11th century. Its beauty lies in its exquisite carvings with gold work.
Sri Adikesava Perumal Temple
Located 10 km from Kanchipuram, this temple is famous for the inscriptions on its walls. Its foundation was laid in the 9th century.
Ekambareswarar Temple
Largest temple in Kanchipuram, Ekambaranatha Temple was built in honor of Lord Shiva. It houses 1000 Lingas.
Kailasanatha Temple
Built in red sandstone in the 8th century, this temple has beautiful carvings such as the carving of Urdhva Tandava dance of Shiva and laughing face of goddess Parvati.

Shop for the world famous silk saris and other objects such as fruit basket, candle stands, jewelery boxes and idols of deities made of stone, brass, bronze and copper. Beautiful jute items are also available. Some of the silk saris have borders made of pure gold or silver.
